Your helmet cam may be your best witness

Video answers the “biker was speeding” story better than anything else. Save it the right way.

Why it matters

  • Shows where the other driver was and what they did
  • Can show your speed and lane position
  • Captures plates, witnesses and road conditions
  • Takes rider bias out of the picture

Save it the right way

  1. Stop recording overwrite. Many cameras loop and record over old files. Pull the card or lock the file as soon as you can.
  2. Copy the original file, unedited, to two places (a computer and cloud storage).
  3. Keep the card and camera. The original file and its date and time data can matter.
  4. Don’t trim, filter or add music. Keep an untouched original even if you make a short clip.
  5. Write down the camera model and its clock settings.
Don’t post it. Don’t put crash footage on social media or send it to the other driver’s insurer. Give it to your lawyer first.

What if the video hurts me?

Video can show things you didn’t notice. That’s one more reason to let a lawyer review it before anyone else sees it. Deleting it is not an option: destroying evidence can seriously damage a case.

No camera?

Other riders in your group, nearby dash cams, business cameras and traffic cameras may have caught it. Requests need to go out fast.
